MA in Creative Writing: Alliance University Launches Multilingual and Transdisciplinary Program

MA in Creative Writing Program at Alliance University

Bengaluru: Alliance University, one of South India’s leading UGC-recognized private universities, has launched India’s first multilingual and transdisciplinary MA in Creative Writing, redefining postgraduate literary education for the digital and global age.

This innovative MA in Creative Writing two-year program goes beyond traditional MA English degrees by focusing on original writing across multiple genres – including fiction, non-fiction, poetry, screenwriting, podcast scripting, brand storytelling, science writing, and comic creation.

Emphasizing both regional and global narratives, the MA in Creative Writing curriculum integrates Kannada and Hindi electives and a robust translation component, fostering cross-cultural fluency and creativity.

Open to all graduates regardless of prior literary experience, the course welcomes students and professionals from diverse academic and career backgrounds. It aims to nurture contemporary communicators and storytellers who can influence public discourse through powerful narratives.

“With this programme, we are building a creative ecosystem where writers are trained not only as artists but as change-makers,” said Dr Liju Jacob Kuriakose, Assistant Dean and Head of the Department of Language and Literature at Alliance University.

“Whether your goal is to publish a novel, develop multimedia content, or craft compelling marketing narratives – this programme offers the tools, mentorship, and community to achieve it.”

Hands-On, Industry-Integrated Learning

A standout feature of the MA in Creative Writing is its commitment to immersive, project-based learning. Students participate in intensive writing workshops led by award-winning writers and screenwriters from India and abroad.

They also:

  • Curate and host the Alliance Literary Festival, India’s largest university-led literary event
  • Create podcasts and YouTube content via the university’s Cosmopolis media platform
  • Edit and publish the university’s in-house literary magazine and research journal
  • Receive one-on-one mentorship for long-form writing projects

“Creative writing today is a core competency, not a niche skill,” said Dr Ravi Chakraborty, Program Director. “From storytelling in branding and advertising to scriptwriting for film and OTT platforms, writing is at the center of every creative and strategic industry. Our program bridges these domains through a future-ready curriculum.”

Dynamic Curriculum with Real-World Impact

The program includes specialized modules on digital content creation, marketing communications, translation, publishing, and storytelling for new media platforms. Students are prepared for diverse careers in publishing, screenwriting, journalism, advertising, public relations, content strategy, arts programming, and academia.
